We live in a thrilling new world where more and more discoveries are being made right in front of our very eyes. With so many recent advancements, it’s impossible to keep track of what’s achievable and what remains beyond reach. Let’s leave our ignorant days behind us and dive head-first into ten riveting discoveries that will leave your mouth hanging wide open.

1. Eternal Life Bacteria (2017)

We’re starting with the promise of an immortal lifespan that will boost your immunity and make you live a longer life. While scientists have not been able to prove that this bacteria can give you eternal life, there have been ongoing tests on various animals, like mice and fruit flies, who became more muscular and lived longer after being injected with it.

This scientist even went as far as using it on himself and has reported that he’s been feeling great and more productive. Is this the start of a sci-fi TV show? Only time will tell.

2. New Life (2015-Present)

Does life outside our planet exist? I think it’s improbable that we’re the only living beings in the entire universe. As it appears, scientists have recently uncovered new Earth-like planets with the potential to host living, breathing sentient organisms.

This will change how we view and define life because we simply don’t know what these aliens will look and appear like.

3. Robotic Body Parts (2018)

While the concept of prosthetic body parts isn’t new, what’s exciting is how far we’ve come in the field. With new research and development taking place across the globe, we’re coming closer and closer to turning ourselves into humanoids.

In 2018, the first person to successfully attach a robotic arm to his skeleton, Johnny Matheny, could control the chunk of metal with his mind. This was a whopping success for people with degenerative conditions who can now imagine a more manageable life moving forward.

4. Transferring Memories (2018)

As much as it feels like a plot from a Netflix movie, back in 2018, scientists were successfully able to transfer reflexive memories between snails using their RNA. Using a slight shock, the researchers reinforced the defense mechanism of the first batch of snails.

They then shared their RNA with another set, who started instinctively positioning themselves into a defensive pose when administering that same shock. While it may seem like a small stride, this is a groundbreaking discovery that can lead us down a whole new path.

5. Evolving AI (2022)

AI is revolutionizing the world, with everyone hoping on the bandwagon. However, many small advancements are still taking place in the field that are hard to keep up with. One notable achievement occurred in 2022 when graduate school students at Nagoya University began to ponder over the concept of metamemory to make AI more human-like.

Using neural networks, they evolved their model to the point where it performed similarly to the monkeys in previous studies! That’s one incredible breakthrough.

6. Reverse Aging (2018)

Living forever seems like an odd topic since humans don’t possess the capacity to imagine what that will look like. However, according to a study published in 2018, we might be closer to achieving it than we thought. Harvard Medical School has successfully reversed one of the leading factors that causes us to age: blood flow.

In a trial experiment with some mice, adding nicotinamide mononucleotide helped reduce their flow. In essence, it seems like an insignificant speck of information, but if you look at it from a holistic lens, it means that with further work, we might be able to turn back time itself.

7. Tears of Blood (2023)

Who says Dracula only exists in fictional books? Scientists recently tested some biological matter of Vlad Drăculea that led them to find proteins in his genes, indicating a disease known as Haemolacria. In this sickness, you cry tears of blood, making the entire thing a little morbid.

What makes this really interesting is that this individual was known for impaling his enemies and crying red tears. We now know that he wasn’t a monster from Vampire Diaries but was just another man suffering from a disease.

8. Fighting Diabetes (2019)

Diabetes is a global problem that has taken the lives of several who suffer from it. However, a research paper was published in 2019, showing a positive correlation between children who were given the Rotavirus vaccine and reduced rates of diabetes.

This can potentially be the gateway for combating the illness head-on and helping save the lives of many.

9. Faux Silk (2021)

Oxford University students have achieved the impossible by mimicking spiders spinning silk. They’ve successfully been able to make similar fibers that are 1000 times stronger and more durable! This also has a way smaller carbon footprint, which means we don’t need to destroy Mother Nature anymore for silk.

10. Proxima D (2021)

The void of space has an unfathomable amount of planets, and one such world was recently discovered by a team of astronauts in Chile named Proxima D. This, by far, has been the closest star to the sun orbiting Proxima Centauri. While all of this seems like a scene from Star Wars, I promise you it’s real.
